Cowgirl Chic Tote Bag

I told you about the Romantic Gothic Ghosts workshop.  And I made a tote bag using that theme.  Of course, I had to try my hand at a cowgirl tote bag ala Collage Camp.  Here is the result:
Cowgirl Chic
I originally thought I would make a canvas bag, but decided to use the flower print instead.  I pinned the "Cowgirl Chic" tag onto the bag in case someone would want to remove it.  There is also an old heart cut from a quilt piece and a small bow added to it.  Nice color, nice layers.

I like it better.  What do you think???

Rhinestone Cowgirls

I have made a set of mini journals and decorated them in what I call "rhinestone cowgirls."  Here is the first set I want to share with you.  These will also be posted for sale on my Etsy shop, Vintage Recycled, a little later today.  Got to do some more cropping.
I call them my Rhinestone Cowgirls because I decorated each little journal with pieces of old rhinestone jewelry.  The two cowgirl images at the left and center are pics of Prairie Rose Henderson.  She was quite the cowgirl in her day!  She was the first to actually make and wear pants instead of a long split skirt while participating in rodeos.  I do not know who the cowgirl is on the right.  The cowgirl on the right is Mabel Strickland.
Here are the backs of the journals.  They match to the ones pictured directly above.  I love using the left over bits and pieces from all the collage work I did in Collage Camp with KC Willis.  Great way to use them up!

I am off to do some cropping and then post these on my Etsy shop, Vintage Recycled.

Collage Camp

Those of you who have followed my blog for more than a year know that I was very excited about taking the KC Willis Collage Camp online last year.  I created a lot of collages and submitted several to Sew Somerset in January of this year and they chose several of my collages and a fabric book for publication.

I will be listing pieces of my art work for sale in my Etsy shop, Vintage Recycled.  I have so many that I need to let go of some of them.  And I want to start another project using the techniques I learned in Collage Camp.  Here are the first two:
Little Ruby Culbertson notebook.
A collage on a vintage log cabin cutter quilt square.  Check them out in my shop.

I don't know if you feel like I do, but letting go of something I love and created myself is often hard for me to do.  It's like giving up a part of me.  How do you feel about your work?

Small canvas collages

I had these two small canvases left over from an unfinished project. They were originally painted. So, I used crackle paint over the canvas, and then antiqued it with vintage photo ink. You should recognize the Silversmith's Daughter (6"x6"). I had done this little piece a year or more ago with a corrugated board frame. The turquoise is a string of bits for making jewelry. I mounted the picture on a coffee dyed piece of fabric, then all of that on another piece of corrugated board. I finally glued it to the canvas. Love the doo-dads! It looks like bits her father might have used to make jewelry for her.
This is a little child that I mounted onto the small canvas (4"x4"). I love the colorful bead trim. It might have been a piece off of her costume.

I just have to add some eye screws and beaded wire to hang these two small framed pieces. Just another way to use the techniques learned from KC Willis Collage Camp. And I am using up things from my stash!

It's Friday

Time to show more aprons. These are going to Merchant Square on Saturday. I just love them! The top row of three aprons are called "workday aprons." I think that is because housewives wore them while doing housework. The bottom row of two are "party aprons." They were usually made of voile or netting. The white one is flocked. Not useful fabrics if you are doing housework! All of these are vintage.

I have been buying Country Living magazine again. I used to subscribe but quit over a year ago because I think they have gotten away from their "roots" -- which is country living. Somehow a loft in New York City decorated in stark "country" style is not country to me. But they seem to be getting back to country lately. The September issue does have a nice article on lockets. I love lockets! I buy them when I can find them. They are a reminder of my childhood. I had a pretty locket my grandmother gave me. I don't know where it is now.
These are in my stash right now. I have been using them lately in my fabric collages for KC Willis Collage Camp.
This locket can be found on my "Ruby" collage. I noticed in the image of Ruby that she was wearing a locket.
This locket is on the most recent collage I did, Lady in Black.

Do you have a locket from your childhood? Did your mother or grandmother have one?? I think they are wonderful keepsakes. I am going to continue to look for mine. It has to be somewhere around here!

Prairie Rose Henderson pages

I think Prairie Rose is one of the best cowgirls of the Old West. She was a rodeo star. She rode broncs!! Also did barrel racing, trick riding, calf roping, you name it! She was the first cowgirl to actually wear pantaloons to ride horses. Prairie Rose was handy with a needle and thread, too! She sewed her own costumes. I had a beaded bit of fabric in my stash so I used it on her pages. I thought that perhaps that beaded bit could have been part of one of her costumes (well, not really, but it is nice to make up these things!). The denim ruffle at the bottom of the page is actually from a little girl's skirt that I found in a thrift shop. Just cut off the ruffle and used some of it here. I am going to use parts of the skirt in other projects.

On Tuesday I am off to Virginia to visit my son and his family. My granddaughter's fifth birthday is Wednesday and my son's birthday is next Saturday. Big family birthday party next Sunday to celebrate. Can't wait!

After I get back (July 27th), I want to have a give-away going on my blog. So stay tuned!

Cowgirl Up! Pages

Sorry I have been absent for so long. Just have a lot to do that doesn't involve any creating. This weekend is the birthday sale at Merchant Square. That means pricing and taking stuff up to my booth to get ready for the sale.

Been working on finishing up my pages for a fat book collaboration I signed on to do. The pages are due by Aug. 1 to the hostess. Had to get them done this week and in the mail because next week I will be in Virginia for a visit. My granddaughter and son are having birthdays next week. I must be there!! I had birthday shopping to do so I could get packages into the mail for next week.

Here is a peek inside of the Cowgirl Up! fabric book I just finished. Love the heart made out of a quilt piece. Little Ruby Culbertson appears again. This is one of my favorite images. She was a real cowgirl wannabe as the left page says. Too cute!

My next adventure into the KC Willis Collage Camp is Altars and Shrines in her Mixed Media Mania. Am now in the collecting stage for a box in which to build a shrine. Hmm! Wonder what I will use inside??

Are you headed to Art Unraveled in two weeks?? I will attend the Shopping Extravaganza. Always want to see what is new! Hope it will be successful this year. This economy is terrible!!

Sweet Things fabric book

I started this next fabric book over the weekend. Kim has told me that customers at Mystic Paper that have asked if I am going to do a fabric book. The answer is YES!! And Sweet Things is the first one. I wanted to do something totally different from the Prairie Doves fabric book. This is where I started. Lots of girlie fabrics, lace, whites and off whites, and plenty of color. There will be lots of neat ideas tucked inside as well. I will update you as I get pages done. Once this one is completed and on Mystic Paper's class schedule, I am going to do another one very similar to Prairie Doves for all the cowgirls out there!!

I really have enjoyed KC Willis Collage Camp and strongly encourage you to look at the link and then sign up. You won't regret it!

Prairie Doves, the last pages

These are the last two pages. This is Ruth Roland with her horse, Joker. Ruth was a famous silent film star in the 19-teens and 20's. She often starred in westerns and performed some famous escapes on horseback from the bad guys. I don't believe I have ever seen a western with her in it. Silents aren't my thing. I bought an old leather skirt at a thrift store and that is the backing behind the photo and the lace. Also an old bandana from a thrift store is on the opposite page. This book was the perfect place to use these.

Got to find a source for small rusty stars and hearts soon. My supply is dwindling. Suggestions anyone? Online or otherwise. Sure do miss Craftmart (all you East Valley dwellers will know what I am talking about).

Prairie Doves 4

This image gave me some pain. Can you imagine wearing a corset and having to tie it tight in order to get a tiny waist which was so popular around 1900?? I couldn't!! That's why I put the following quote on these pages:"Corsets! Too tight! Rather wear my camisole and my pantaloons. Sarah." I have added a vintage garter/stocking piece as well as more lace and a small doily. I don't think they had those fancy garter pieces when this picture was taken. I think these ladies either rolled their stockings or used elastic type garters.

Remember girdles??!!! Ouch!! I was really, really glad when pantihose became popular!! How about you??!!

Prairie Doves 3

Here are the next two pages in the Prairie Doves book. This is Prairie Rose Henderson. She was a champion bronc rider!! BRONC RIDER!!! After some research I discovered that she was popular in the rodeos, made her own costumes, and dared to actually wear fancy pantaloons (which she probably made herself) when riding! Women in the early 1900's just didn't wear "pants" without a long skirt. Prairie Rose found those long skirts just didn't suit when ridin' broncs!! Now there's a real woman of the West! The quote says "Bronc ridin' is more fun than cookin' and cleanin'. Prairie Rose Henderson." I used a bit of glitz that I thought might have been on one of her fancier costumes and an old bead necklace that she might have worn. What a gal!!! Certainly couldn't picture her cookin' and cleanin'!!

Prairie Doves 2

Here are the next two pages in the Prairie Doves fabric collage book. I have used this image in another collage, but I really like it. A little bit of black velvet and lace, a little bit of red silk, and part of an old child's dress.

Prairie Doves 1

Here is a pic of the first two pages of the Prairie Doves fabric book I created for the challenge on KC Willis Collage Camp. The quote on the left says "Life out here in the West is darned hard. You either compete with the men or for the men. Most ain't worth the trouble. A Prairie Dove." The picture on the right is Lulu Parr. She was a rodeo star. I framed her picture with a piece of tatting sewn down with a zigzag stitch. This was a fun challenge! Besides, I think I will make another book.

Another picture tomorrow! Stay tuned!

KC Willis' challenge

KC sent out a challenge to the collage camp members to make a piece using recycled materials. Nothing store-bought except the transfer paper. Use second hand fabrics, doo-dads and trims. Well, I couldn't pass that challenge up! Most everything in my stash is from thrift stores, antique malls, yard sales and estate sales. I've been wanting to do a fabric book, so this was the perfect time to accept the challenge and dive right in. Here is the book titled "Prairie Doves." I wanted it to portray both the cowgirls of the West as well as the ladies of the evening. Here is a pic of the book from the bottom edge. It is filled with fabric, lace, trims and doo-dads.
That's all for this time! Want to get you to come back and see more of the inside pages of this book!

Two new fabric collages

I have been working on two new fabric collages using the techniques learned from KC Willis in her Collage Camp. You can check out the website by clicking on the KC Willis Collage Camp badge on the right. This first one I have called The Silversmith's Daughter. She is Navajo and probably lived at one time on the large Navajo reservation here in northeastern Arizona. There is an old postcard that has her tinted image on it and describes her as the Silversmith's Daughter. I have loved this image for a long time. I incorporated this sepia image into the collage. I used silver doo-dads as well as some turquoise to give the feeling of the jewelry and beadwork she must be wearing. Lucky girl to have such a talented dad!
This collage is called Hopi Daughter. Another image that I find intriguing! The Hopi Indians also have a reservation in northeastern Arizona. Their reservation is entirely surrounded by the Navajo reservation.

What I liked about this girl is her hairdo -- remind you of Princess Leia?? Did me!

Best Friends and Giddyup!

This is one of my favorite cowgirl pictures. You can just tell she loves her horse! I think this gal is riding her horse or she is in charge of a buckboard with two horses. Whichever, she is telling those horses to "Giddyup!!"

Two more collages on the log cabin squares. I love that quilt and the colors!

One little indian boy tag

I love doing tags! Why not try a tag using the collage camp techniques? So here is the first one. I love this little boy or is it a little girl? I can't figure that one out. But whichever, the outfit is just wonderful! Must have been a favorite outfit for this child in order to have the picture taken. I printed out a bunch of transfers in a small size (there are more to come) and ironed them to small pieces of the dyed canvas. Then I just used left over bits of fabric and some embellishments to complete the tag. It doesn't take much. I have to remind myself to "KISS" -- keep it simple stupid -- because I tend to over do!

My doll Jane

Here is my latest fabric collage. I have wanted to incorporate this doll dress into a fabric collage for a long time. I actually transferred the tiny picture to the dress and then hand stitched tatting and tiny buttons to the picture over a year ago. It is a picture of a little girl beside a chair with her favorite doll all dressed in white. There is a tiny doll bib that I attached to the dress and made a pocket out of it. From the pocket I draped a tiny pink pearl necklace. Perhaps you can see (it's awfully tiny!) that the little girl in the picture has on a pearl necklace. I used lots of vintage trims and old fabrics. The lacy piece on top of the ticking is an old dresser doily. The coffee dyed it up great.

I am headed to Virginia early on Thursday morning to visit my grandchildren. June 1st is little Ryan's third birthday. The festivities begin next Saturday. What fun!

Also, while I am in Virginia I am going to visit my favorite store, Lucketts General Store, located in Lucketts, Virginia about 7 miles north of Leesburg. It has been a favorite place of mine to visit and shop for years. They are having a spring sale next weekend! Shabby and chic!!
