1800's Wedding Photo

How many of you have seen these wedding photos from the mid to late 1800's?? The bride is in a black wedding dress yet wearing the traditional white veil. Do you know why?
Do you think it is because someone in the bridal party's family had passed on? Do you think it is macabre?

This time in history is known as the Victorian Era. It is during the reign of Queen Victoria of England (1837-1901). Queen Victoria (seen below) ruled England for 63 years. During that time her husband and consort, Prince Albert, died. After his passing she dressed in black for the remainder of her life. To honor the Queen in her mourning, brides of the Victorian Era wore black wedding dresses. That is why you see photos like the one seen above.I often have these wedding photos for sale in my booth at Merchants Square and no one wants to buy them. They think it is related to a death in the family of someone in the wedding party. That it is somehow icky or macabre. But, I think these photos show a tribute to Queen Victoria who was much loved by all during that time.

What do you think?

I have heard this before, but had forgotten the story. My new pewter sugar and creamer fit in perfectly with my others. Thanks

Thank you for the interesting history of the old wedding photos. I love old photographs and buy them often. Perhaps you can offer information on my tintype I just blogged about.

PS I am trying to find a copy of the new Sew Somerset magazine. It must be 'as scarce as hens teeth'. Ha!

If I remember my costume history correctly, prior to Queen Victoria brides wore their best dress. When she married in white the tradition spread.
If I ever remarry, I would love to wear red but wedding dress color is so full of symbol and tradition.
I'd love to see the gown the Queen is wearing in this picture!

Hi there,

I know this is an old post, but just came across it while looking for info on black Victorian wedding dresses. I happen to examining one right now in a costume collection at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Would you be able to provide the source for your information? It's a great bit of info and would help a lot with understanding the (gorgeous) ensemble lying on a table behind me.

Thanks so much!
