Etsy Cottage Style Fall Color Party

This month Etsy Cottage Style Fall Color Party hit on the colors I love best, fall colors -- browns, beige, khaki, chocolate.  A lot of my artwork is done in these shades and colors.  My "cottage" is more of a  "rustic style" with a western theme.  I am going to share with you a lot of things I have that come in these colors.
This was a fabric book I created when I joined KC Willis' Collage Camp.  I had a lot of fun putting this together.  It now is part of KC's personal collection.  She told me it gives her inspiration!
This is the second fabric collage book I created entitled "Prairie Gals".  The entire book was published in the Summer 2010 issue of Sew Somerset.  I still have this book.

A lot of people I talk to while they visit my booth at Merchant Square are surprised to learn that I do not have a lot of shabby chic, white, cottage style items in my home -- only in my booth.  My bedroom is really the only place where I do have the cottage look using whites, creams, black, sage green and pink.  But here is a peek at some items around the rest of my home.
I love the wood box with the brands on it and the handles are horseshoes.  My sister gave this piece to me.  Also love the bottles wrapped with old baskets.
The collage on the left is one of my creations.  Again you can see that recurring theme of the blog party's color theme for this month.
I love the old, well-loved and worn buckaroo boots on top of the great leather box.  Below is an old egg basket with genuine stirrups highlighted against the vintage doily.
In my entry way is my grandmother's kitchen clock.  It used to work, but quit after being moved around the country so many times.  I have paid more in trying to get it running than it is worth.  But I love it.  At least it is right twice a day!!  This gorgeous antique chest and old mirror I picked up in Leesburg, VA when we lived back east.
I love these old jugs and the crock.  The jug on the far right has a cobalt design and my husband found that on a TDY to Massachusetts.  You can see that I am a cowgirl at heart.
And another piece of my artwork done in the coffee dyed fabrics, browns and tans.

Thanks for visiting my blog today and sharing in the fun of the Etsy Cottage Style Fall Color Party.

Small journals

I wanted to try my hand at covering little journals with coffee dyed fabrics and then stitching vintage pictures on the fabrics. I like the way these turned out.
Images are downloaded from Digital Collage Sheets. Check them out! They have some beautiful images.

Coffee dyeing

Here is the pile of fabrics, trims and flowers that I sorted out this morning for dyeing. They have all been washed before and are ready to go. The unwashed fabrics are in the washer as I do this blog. This is a real old piece of ticking and a vintage tablecloth or bed coverlet. The ticking looks grungy along the edges, right?! Well, I asked my friend, Joy, about it and she told me it is actually the downy feathers that are stuck there. I washed the fabric long ago and the down didn't come off. The old tablecloth is in tatters -- and I have a huge amount of it. It won't be dyed. It is the perfect color already!Into the big pot they go! I used vanilla flavored instant coffee and it smells great! Then quickly into the bucket! Then out to the big sage bush to dry in the sun. Don't have a great wood fence or a wood deck. Thought the bushes would do!On to the second bush!
I am not convinced the flowers will come out of this in reasonable shape. My dilemma is with the pretty pillow sham. Here you can see the front folded over the back. Love these fabrics! I think I should take the sham apart and just dye parts of the fabric. I do love the colors as they are now, but perhaps a bit of coffee would help calm the loud off white. Hmm!What do you think? Perhaps a weak batch of coffee?

Here is the newly washed fabrics right out of the washer -- in one BIG clump! Spent quite a while separating all of it. But I did!
Clumpies!! I've got lots of clumpies!

Western Collage for Joy

Last Thursday and then again yesterday, I went over to my friend Joy's house to help her with a western collage that she wanted to do for a long time. She has been collecting and rounding up things to incorporate in this collage for months. On Thursday, we just positioned the major pieces on the canvas and tossed around ideas for the whole collage. Joy knew the look she wanted and knew that I knew what she wanted (does that make sense??). She had homework to do over the weekend -- dye vintage fabric for the background for the entire collage, ink the edges of the canvas, and hunt for more items that were good candidates for the whole collage. Here is the end result:
The large photo is actually one of Joy's entire family when they were together in Colorado. I love these old western-style pictures that are popular. However, I could never get my husband to do one with me when we lived in Colorado. The "frame" around the picture is actually rustic-looking sequins. Joy shops while she travels with her husband and finds the best things!! You should see the "barbed wire" she found at a Ben Franklin store a while back! Great stuff!!Here you can see the edge of the coffee dyed fabric and the great upholstery tacks that Joy had to put around the edge of the canvas. What a darling little cap gun to add to the collage. It is wired in place.Had to add the highest royal flush you can get in a poker game. Check out the great graphics on those cards! And the bullet hole in the 10. Joy had collected a lot of driftwood pieces and other objects this summer while she was in Connecticut helping her daughter with the new baby. We incorporated those into the collage and wired or glued them down. The letter you see is a copy of an actual letter her grandmother had written (do I have that right, Joy??).This rusty star in a circle was perfect for this corner. It, too, is wired down and there are beads strung on the ends of the wire pieces to add touches of color.

Now, I have to put together a collage for myself! This was a fun project to do with Joy! We had a ball picking and choosing what to put on this and when it was all done Joy was thrilled with the final piece. She has a stash to envy! Thanks, Joy! It was great fun!!
