Payson weekend, Part I

Gail and I had an absolutely fabulous time last weekend in Payson. I arrived up there at around 9:30 in the morning and called Gail on my cell phone to find out where the 5th wheel was in the RV park. Instead, she directed me to the first yard sale. She was already there and told me to drive over to meet her! I never even got out of the car! We were on the go immediately! All day!

The first thing that struck me were the flowers! An old favorite of mine are hollihocks! I haven't seen hollihocks since I was a child and we visited grandparents and other relatives in Iowa and Kansas every year. My Grandmother Sowers always had hollihocks in her garden. She lived in a really small town in Henderson, Iowa. That's where my mother grew up. This yard was full of hollihocks.
A close up of the beautiful pink hollihocks. BTW, these were taken with my small Olympus camera. Didn't take the new one because I don't feel ready to take good pictures with it yet. Still learning.
These beautiful roses were found in Pine across the road from several shops and a thrift store. The bushes were loaded with blooms.
Daylilies!! I haven't seen daylilies since we moved here from Virginia. I had loads of daylilies in my yard in Virginia. Loved them! They looked great and require no care!
Flags along the fence at a small group of shops in Pine. The shops look like old buildings that may have been on a small farm. Getting ready for the Fourth of July!!

Tomorrow I will have pictures of my finds while shopping in Payson. I haven't unpacked them yet! Too tired.

Escaping for the weekend

I am headed up to Payson early tomorrow morning for a weekend of treasure hunting!! My good friend, Gail, has invited me up there for the weekend. We plan to visit the antique malls tomorrow afternoon. On Saturday we will be haunting the yard sales around there.

Looking forward to the cooler temperatures! I'll be back on Sunday with pictures of the found treasures, I hope! Back to you then!

Its Arrived!!!

Purchased the Nikon D40 camera on Sunday from Costco (online). It arrived this afternoon!!

It took the entire stimulus check, but I think it will be well worth it! Now the fun begins as I learn how to use this powerhouse of a camera.

Costco had a great deal on this camera and it runs through the middle of July. Check it out! I thought it was going to be over $800, but ended up being $200 under that. Goodbye stimulus check, hello camera!

ATC's and cards

The Mystic Paper drop-off ATC swap was a big success! There were 15 sets of cards that were traded. And they all were terrific! If you would like to see all of them, Mystic Paper keeps a binder full of the traded ATC's.

Here are the cards that I received this month.
Yesterday was also my monthly card making class with the Stampin' Up dealer in my area. I take these classes to meet other ladies who enjoy this kind of work and also (are you ready for this?) to catch up on the latest "goin's on" in this community where I live. Lots of stories! In fact, one lady had just returned from a 73 day cruise (way too long for my taste!) to Africa! She had this wonderful picture book full of photos that she had taken on the trip. She somehow managed to send all the photos by computer to somewhere (??) and they put together the book for her of page after page of her wonderful photos (just printed pages, no actual photos on the pages like a scrapbook) and mailed it to her shortly after she arrived home. Didn't know that was even possible!Anyway, here are the three cards we made yesterday. I really like the mouse card! The white cardstock is actually punched out and the yellow cardstock is behind it. Looks like cheese!

P.S. to Judy W. Your first ATC was great! Good job!! Keep them coming!!

Uncovered while cleaning

Last year I bought a "clock" collage at a yard sale. The clock didn't work and a number was missing (a second 2 for the 12). What caught my eye were the clock parts and the printers block letters and numbers that were glued to this "clock" collage on burlap. I asked the seller what he wanted for the clock. He said "a dollar." SOLD!!

Right now I have no idea what to do with these. They aren't tiny.

Cleaning up and out!

My son (the one who was so sick last month) will be moving in with me until he can find a job here in Arizona. Long story, but just know that I am quite happy that he will be here with me.

I have spent several hours this morning cleaning up and cleaning out the spare room. I have emptied shelves, drawers and clothes hanging space in the closet. You need to understand, however, that the closet is filled with shelves, drawers, and limited clothes space that was created by a closet designing outfit. Part of my huge stash is in there. It is also my sewing room and pricing area for the things for Merchant Square.

Thought you might like to see the earrings I found in there today and the card I made for them. They will be on sale at Merchant Square today. I am taking them and a lot of other great finds (in the spare room) to the Square this afternoon.Got this display idea from the trunk show at The Paper Studio last evening. I met Kim there and we looked at the jewelry and art pieces created by DJ Pettitt and Deryn Mentock. They are doing a seminar at The Paper Studio this weekend.
I bought this small handmade book by DJ Pettitt. I just love the face on the cover and the saying she wrote. I would recognize her art work anywhere. She is often published in Somerset Studio. Thanks, DJ!

Packages from Fresno

As many of you already know, I lost my beloved sister to brain cancer two and a half years ago. Her husband, my brother-in-law (BIL), called me a couple of days ago to let me know that he was sending two boxes to me full of doll furniture, a doll, and lots of doll clothes. He has decided not to live in their huge house anymore and has started to clean out. He thought that my granddaughter, Kara, might enjoy the doll and the furniture. I think she would too, perhaps in a year or two. So I will send those on to Kara soon.
In the box was this Jan Vogue Doll. Isn't she pretty? She is in her original outfit and with the original box. I think she is in pretty good condition considering that she is approaching 50 years old. We should all look that great at 50!! LOL!! This was my sister's doll.On the bottom of the box you can see that I had drawn a fireplace with rock surround for our pretend doll house. Jan and I had the furniture, but no doll house. Anyway, the furniture would not fit in a regular doll house. It is too big!
Here is a photo of us "girls" with our favorite Ginny dolls. From left to right, our cousin Vickie Jo, me and then Jan. Jan had broken her arm roller skating that summer. Had to wear that awful cast for 6 weeks. It itched like crazy, she said! She was just 7 years old. Vickie Jo is 10 and I was 12 in this photo.

I still have my Ginny doll. She resides in a small metal trunk with all of her clothes. Some of the clothes were store bought and others are hand made, by me. I learned to sew doll clothes when we had the Ginny dolls. My Grandmother Ryan taught me to sew and gave me scraps out of her sewing basket to make doll clothes with. Jan and I could never figure out where her Ginny doll went. She is gone.

My sister died of brain cancer. She had a glioblastoma multiforma. A brain tumor very similar to Ted Kennedy. Although I am no fan of Senator Kennedy, I would not have wished a brain tumor on him. He is going to be very sick for quite a while. Radiation and the oral chemo drug he will be taking will keep him feeling pretty bad. I wish him well, but know in my heart that he won't survive this horrible tumor.

In the works . .

Too darn hot outside to do much! So I am being very productive indoors! I am finishing projects that were laid aside. Back to ATC's -- haven't done those in quite a while. Perusing new magazines received this week. Actually, I think I like being holed up here out of the heat and getting back to work in the kitchen area I call a studio! This is my June ATC for the Mystic Paper drop-off swap. The theme this month was "bugs" -- which covers a lot of things! I used Glimmermist on the background, a favorite stamp and then dug out two sets of butterfly rubons. Then the jewels! Ah! Welcome butterfly!
Dug out from under a pile of papers and stuff the Gypsy Soul cloth book. You remember the book? I had the picture posted for weeks, but had not gotten back to the book to finish it. I did this fabric collage yesterday and added it. Also have added other goodies to the pages I felt needed a punch. Will share those later.
This arrived yesterday. Didn't even open it until this morning. This is the first time in months that I have been inspired by projects seen in here. I had felt that Somerset Studio had taken off in a direction that I am not inspired to go -- too much "over the top" for my taste. That changed with this issue. Pick it up! Sit down with it. Read the articles. Examine the artwork closely. It is a wealth of inspiration! Can you see my yellow stickies on the right? Inspiration!! And I am not even half way through! Oooh! Can't wait to get started today!

But first, exercise at the health club. Will do that after posting this.

The weight is slowly coming off. Lost another pound this week so it is officially 10 pounds gone. Good riddance! Clothes fit better, but am not able to get into the next smaller size yet. Soon!

Tim Russert -- what a loss! I always made time on Sunday mornings to watch Meet the Press. Loved the way Tim pinned guests down; loved the good discussion even if I was talking back to the guests and telling them what I thought of their comments (in some cases, blather!); loved that we always got to hear both sides of an issue; loved Tim because he seemed like such a nice man. I don't think Meet the Press will be the same. I mourn the passing of Tim Russert. God bless you, Tim.

Stimulus check

Mine arrived today on the breath taking trip to the mailbox (it's 111 degrees on my shaded back patio!)! Think this will help ease the financial pain of buying a digital SLR camera that I have been drooling over. Chia's blog has the best wildlife pictures taken with her new SLR camera. I am so envious! Now I feel I can go out and get the camera. OK, where to begin. . . . .

Special cards for gifts

Ah! Back at the studio table -- which is actually my kitchen island, not a table. Got this idea for making quick gifts or "give aways" for friends and people who take my classes. They all measure approximately 3 1/2" x 4 1/2". They all have vintage buttons, lace, ribbon or other pieces. This one has a gold applique that I found while rummaging through a drawer in the spare bedroom. Recognize the little face? It's from the Barbie picture stands a couple of blogs ago -- see below.Old mother-of-pearl (MOP) buttons. You can stamp on ribbon. But make sure you stamp on a piece of paper first so that your second stamp is lighter.Old MOP scarf slide or belt slide. The ribbon is from Mystic Paper.Ah! See a small gift for the upcoming Annie Oakley class?? I have done a bunch more, but will not take up space right here. Maybe I will post them later on the right side of the blog. Again, I was just searching through my box of trims and my scrap box for trim and images. The basic cards are from the Instant Memories and Memories of a Lifetime books that have the CD's. Lots of good stuff in those!!

Clothespins and altered book

Where have I been?? Right here, but not blogging. When I get phone calls from friends wanting to know if I am OK, I think I had better blog! Sorry!

Yesterday I found a bag of old clothespins at Merchant Square. I love these old pins and I decided to decorate a few of them for gifts. I like to give my students a little bag of goodies for taking my classes and these clothespins will be in upcoming goody bags.

So I got out paints in the pretty pastels that I love and painted a few clothespins to see how they would turn out. The mug is my drying rack!! It was the most expedient thing I could find to prop the pins on so they could dry. These three pins are wrapped with old lace, rayon seam binding and ric-rack. I found some tiny dressmakers pins recently which are perfect for holding the trims in place. Here you see the beginnings of the next altered book. I went out to my garage on a scavenger hunt and pulled papers, bingo cards, small file dividers and pages from old books that will become the pages of this book. (You have to believe that my garage is a treasure trove of stuff I have collected!) I have a lot of images that I want to put in it that are very whimsical. They are from "Memories of a Lifetime Weddings" by Sandra Evertson and it comes with a CD of copyright-free images. It's great!

Musings on yesterday

Yesterday I had my yearly mammogram. We all know how that goes! Squash and hold your breath! But I want to take a minute of your time to tell you it is very important. They do save lives! I am an 8 year breast cancer survivor because of my yearly mammograms!

Later in the morning I went thrift store shopping and found these items:Cute little animal pitchers in blue and white. There were about 8 of them. Must have been someone's collection. Now, these are wonderful! They will sell quickly in my booth at Merchant Square -- as will the pitchers. They are marked "45th Barbie Anniversary". Hmm! Must have missed that one! Anyway, I think they are photoholders. Barbie still sells -- although not much else does!Couldn't resist adding faces! I think I will remove those before I sell them, but I thought it was a good idea. They are not permanently fixed to the dress forms.Another picture of the baby quail -- sorry! I first spied them on the front porch a few minutes before they appeared in the back by the slider. They must have walked around the house. I think they have grown since this morning! They looked bigger!

Quail Babies!

I have seen this quail family several times lately. And this morning I was able to get a picture of the mama followed by 7 little ones! They are just way cute! Mama is over on the right. It is hard to pick out all 7 babies unless you know where to look. But you can see some of them quite clearly. They are really quick!

Kim has a new blog! Paris Cowgirl and I love the look!! Way to go, Kim!! High 5! I hope you will be blogging more now! Check it out!

Exercise

Exercise -- necessary for me because I am overweight and have high cholesterol. I try to walk most mornings outside because I love being outdoors instead of in the health club. But as the weather warms, the mornings will no longer be cool, so I will be forced to go to the health club for exercise. But, until then, I walk outside.

I am pleased that I have dropped almost 10 pounds and now that I am on this "roll" I will keep it up. The doctor told me I won't have to take any cholesterol medication if I continue to lose weight, exercise and eat right. Well, since I don't want (actually I'm nearly violently opposed!!) to taking a medication that may, in the long run, create other problems, I will keep on this path. I've got to lose this weight.

This morning the camera went with me on my walk. There are so many pretty flowering shrubs and cactus that I wanted to share those with you.

Often I see some of the small creatures that are here in this neighborhood. This morning I saw a tiny cottontail eating a tender shrub in someone's yard. Couldn't capture him because he was too quick. The other morning I saw a mother quail followed by a LOT (15-20) of tiny baby quail that looked like large brown pompoms on legs scurrying behind her.

I don't know the names of most of these shrubs. But I do know that the purple bush here is sage. It is so pretty when it blooms! The other pink flowers above are oleander, I think -- not really sure. The last one is a cactus that has huge flowers. Those white flowers must be 6 inches across.

Well, I am off to get on with my day. Got a lot of "catch up" things to do today before it gets so hot outside that I don't want to be out there. That is my best excuse to stay indoors and work on projects that are nearly finished. IT'S A DRY HEAT!!

Got new ATC's to share with you soon. The next drop-off swap at Mystic Paper is on June 20th and the theme is "bugs". That encompasses a lot of possible things to use on an ATC.

Flea market finds today

Kim (of Mystic Paper) and I met up this morning at a tiny farm in Mesa located at Brown and Center Streets. There was corn, tomatoes and other vegetables for sale. There was also a small flea market going on and that is where I found these goodies this morning.

Love the three vintage hats I found! Those will be headed to my booth at Merchant Square next week. Also found the small sugar bowl which is so shabby chic! I may keep that and use it to store tiny bits in my studio area. Also found was the pink velvet evening purse on the left side. It is so soft and in great condition! I am going to put a sparkly rhinestone pin on it and take it to Merchant Square, too.

After Kim and I roamed about the small flea market we decided to go to breakfast at Mimi's. We both had yummy quiche! I am still feeling stuffed! Good morning, good friend, good way to start a Saturday!!

Finished collages

Ever since the May/June issue of Somerset Studio arrived, I have been putting together this collage. Lynne Perrella's icon creation on p. 35 was the inspiration for this first collage. This was such fun to put together. It took several weeks because of the trip out of town earlier in May. But it is finally finished. I call her "Madre Tierra" or Earth Mother. I loved using natural elements as well as things from my stash for this collage. Just fun!

The second collage is for my friend, Kim, at Mystic Paper. She LOVES Annie Oakley!! And I told her I would create a collage and teach the class at Mystic Paper. Another friend, Joy, so wants to do something with a western theme, that I thought of her, too, when creating this one. This one is for Kim and Joy. Yeehaw!!
